'These runners just finished and they don't have legs now'

Surgeons spoke about operating theatres that looked like battlefield hospitals as 140 injured victims poured into the city's hospital's - many with wounds only seen in combat. Reports suggest that the small, homemade explosives were packed with ball bearings that tore off feet, ankles, calves and entire legs and they exploded just outside the crowded finish line.

Runner, 78, who became the face of the Boston attacks escaped with only a scraped knee... and even managed to finish the race

Bill Iffrig, 78, of Lake Stevens, Washington, provides one pleasant surprise in a day that has been bleak for the people of Boston. Everyone who has seen the heart-rending footage of the first bomb blast near the finish line of the marathon has watched Mr Iffrig, wearing an orange tank top, tumble to the hard ground. Boston Globe photographer John Tlumacki then took a photograph of Mr Iffrig that became an instant icon. Mr Iffrig is shielding his face on his back while several Boston police officer brace themselves and jump into action.
